The correct calculation (worked example)

For 1 square foot of a 9-inch thick wall:

Step 1: Wall (brickwork) volume. A 9-inch wall is 9 ÷ 12 = 0.75 ft thick. Volume = area × thickness = 1 sq ft × 0.75 ft = 0.75 cubic feet.

Step 2: Volume of one brick with mortar. A standard 190 × 90 × 90 mm brick with a ~12 mm mortar joint becomes about 202 × 102 × 102 mm. That’s ≈ 0.0742 cubic feet per brick (with mortar).

Step 3: Number of bricks. Divide the wall volume by the volume of one brick with mortar:

Number of bricks = wall volume ÷ brick-with-mortar volume = 0.75 ÷ 0.0742 ≈ 10 bricks.

So a 9-inch wall needs about 10 bricks per square foot. (The order matters — you divide the wall volume by the brick volume, not the other way round.)

  • Sand: ~0.27 m³ (≈9.5 cubic feet)
